Diwan al-Murtada

Diwan al-Murtada

As it could be implied from the words of some historians, the poems of SayyidMurtada reach up to twenty thousand couplets.[۱] And the bibliographical sources imply that numerous writers at various periods could find access to some copies of Murtada's Diwan.[۲]

The author of Adab al-Murtada has described a number of copies with which he personally came across, and he has explained about their features in detail.

It seems there are two copies which are the most complete ones: the first is ShaykhMuhammad Samawi's copy, which the author of Adab al-Murtada states to have it in his possession and it consists of ۶ parts; the second is Shaykh Hasan ibnal-Shaykh Muhsin Jawahiri' s copy. This diwan was published in three volumes based on a research by Muhami Rashid al-Saffar in Egypt in ۱۸۵۸ (A.D).

The diwan has an introduction written by al-ShaykhMuhammad Reza al-Shaibi concerning Sharif Murtada's characteristics, which has been extracted out of his own poems. Next, there is a second introduction about Murtada, his diwan, his burial place and his house, written by Dr. Mustafa Jawad, the annotator and translator of the references of the diwan.

Finally, there is a third introduction added to it by the researcher of the diwan. In this last introduction, after an extended scholarly translation of Murtada, the researcher has introduced the reliable copies of the diwan and he has explained about the features of his research.

The researcher of the diwan has given up the original order, which had apparently been historical; and he has proceeded according to the rime syllables, and he has interpreted the words of the poems.

The researcher has not only provided the poems of the diwan, but he has also presented some other poems which he somehow recognized to have been composed by Sayyid, such as the poems included in the following books: al-Shahab fi al-Shaib wa al-Shabab, and Tayf al-Khayal (written by Sayyid himself); Manaqib by Ibn Shahr Ashub, Kashkoul by Shaykh Baha'i and Anwar al-Rabi'.
