Sayyid Murtada’s Feqh ol-Hadith Approach in Al-Amaali

Sayyid Murtada’s Feqh ol-Hadith Approach in Al-Amaali

“Gharib ol-Hadith” (an odd hadith) is a term which is used when there is a complex and unpredictable word in a hadith; sometimes, this word plays a central role in the meaning of the narration, without which the reader or the audience would not realize the purpose of the hadith. Sayyid Murtada’s Amaali is a book which contains such kind of hadiths; however, this book has never been included in this category. Through a classification of the approaches of this book, we try to introduce it as an example of such sources. The content of the book does not follow a chapter by chapter classification, neither has it been arranged alphabetically; rather, it enjoys a unique approach because it boastfully present the author’s knowledge comprehensively and it provides us with a combination of Sayyid Murtada’s knowledge including theology, jurisprudence and hadith. We intend to study Sayyid Murtada’s unique approach; therefore, we have classified the cases used by him and categorized them in eight ways of retrieving of complex words as the following: paying attention to the Arab culture and styles in understanding the meaning, poetic evidences, Qur’anic evidences, anecdotal evidences, rational and theological reasoning, considering the verbal and morphological derivatives, study of the hadith and paying attention to the approaches taken by particular linguists.

Keywords: Amaali, Sayyid Murtada, Gharib al-Hadith, the Arab popular culture, poetic evidence.
