Association and Dissociation in Sayyid Murtada’s Thought and Conduct

Sayyid Murtada’s conduct and scientific works show that he was unique in his era in regard with association and dissociation (Twalla and Tabarra). Based on two principles of “the texts supporting Imamate” and “dissociation from the disbelievers of the text”, he argued that association and dissociation are two Shiite rules. Despite interaction and cooperation with non-Shiite rulers and scholars, he never retreated from these two rules. In order to unveil the real face of the enemies of Ahl ol-Bayt PBUT, Sayyid Murtada provided evidence for Imam Ali’s lack of consent concerning the caliphate issue and illegitimacy of non-allegiance to him. By analyzing the content of Sayyid Murtada’s works and also with a review of his social and political conduct, his view toward association and dissociation can be appreciated.
