Denial of Trans-religion Imamate in Sayyid Murtada’s Viewpoint

Denial of Trans-religion Imamate in Sayyid Murtada’s Viewpoint

Interpretation of Imamate as leadership in the religious and worldly affairs has a long history among theologians; however, Sayyid Murtada, has excluded worldly matters from the definition of this term. According to his reductive interpretation of Imamate, inevitably the two issues of Imam’s knowledge and infallibility has been restricted to only the religious affairs. Such a view deserves to be studied both from the viewpoint of the theological principles and its outcomes. After a brief discussion about the trans-religion Imamate and trans-religion knowledge, this study focuses on the available documents from Sayyid Murtada, while mostly dealing with the consequences of this theory about infallibility and some of its ambiguous aspects.

Keywords: Imamate, infallibility, Imam's knowledge, Sayyid Murtada, negligence, obedience
