The Event of ‘Ashura from Sayyid Murtada’s Viewpoint: An Analytic Approach

The Event of ‘Ashura from Sayyid Murtada’s Viewpoint: An Analytic Approach

There are two questions to be asked about ‘Ashura: ۱. Why didn’t Imam Hussein PBUH compromise like his brother Imam Hassan PBUH to save his own and his companions lives, despite the fact that his companions and facilities were less than those of his brother’s? ۲. Did he know that he will be killed? If so, why did he fight? If not so, why didn’t he consider the predictions proposed by the others about his trip? Sayyid Murtada does not believe in the claims implied from the mentioned questions. Consequently based on some historical propositions, he proposes a rational and persuasive (and not just religious and theological) analysis of the calamity of ‘Ashura. His view is immediately criticized by his student, Sheikh Tusi. Besides, they present a discussion about the Imam’s knowledge and its quality and quantity, while Sayyid Murtada believes it to be limited, and Sheikh Tusi considers it detailed.
