The Origins of Sayyid Murtada’s Thoughts

Next to Sheikh Mufid, Sayyid Murtada is the most outstanding Shiite thinker, theologian and criticizer among the M’tazilah and ‘Adliyah. His fame grew in the fifth century (after Hijrah) and has lasted through the history. He was a theoretician and a rational criticizer and thinker; meanwhile he utilized the inheritance from the previous scholars in the field of the study of the religion, the Qur’an and the literature. He revised the previous works and improved them. The origins of his thoughts can be extracted through the study of his works. This article deals with the origins of his thoughts to be found in his works in four fields: ۱. theology; ۲. interpretation of the Qur’an; ۳. principles of fiqh; ۴. the Arabic literature and poetry.
