A Study of some of Sayyid Murtada’s Opinions about Dowry

This article presents Sayyid Murtada’s opinion about the discussion of the minimum and maximum amount of dowry and compares it with the prevalent opinion among the Shiite jurisprudence and the views of the other sects. In addition, the issues related to fiqh ol-sonnah (the dowry in the conduct of the prophet) and its function in the Islamic jurisprudence and law are discussed in this article. The dominant view in the Shiite jurisprudence is that fiqh ol-sonnah is not mandatory; and the couples can determine any amount they wish for the dowry and there is no binding minimum and maximum amount. Fiqh ol-sonnah is the prophet’s tradition and is desirable and a low amount for dowry is also praiseworthy and desirable.
